Many Americans feel celebrities in our society receive a free pass, and can break the law without repercussions. The Occupational, Health & Safety Administration (OSHA) must have missed this memo, since they recently cited the $65 million Broadway production, “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.” OSHA fined “Spider-Man” $12,600 for three separate workplace safety violations.
The production has experienced a slew of setbacks, including casting problems, injuries, technical difficulties, New York State Department of Labor violations and six premiere postponements. OSHA said the employees had been, “exposed to the hazards of falls or being struck during flying routines because of improperly adjusted or unsecured safety harnesses.”
Although the production agreed to enact additional safety protocols following the injury of actor Christopher Tierney, in December of 2010, it was too little, too late. Rick Miramontez, a spokesman for the show, said the musical “remains in compliance with all government agencies and continues to adhere to all safety protocols.”
The OSHA citations were issued to the production company, 8 Legged Productions LLC, which has the right to challenge them within 15 business days of receipt.
